Trying to build a family can be challenging, especially for those who have to balance being in the military too. Infertility is a personal journey that comes with a lot of heavy moments and often painful experiences. For women in the military and women veterans, these struggles can come with unique challenges that are rarely discussed. From the impact of military service on reproductive health to the emotional toll of infertility, women veterans face barriers that make seeking care and support even more difficult. It’s time to bring attention to the hidden struggles these women endure.
The Impact of Military Service on Reproductive Health
Women who serve in the military often experience environmental and physical factors that can affect their reproductive health. Studies have shown that women veterans experience infertility at higher rates than the general population, with 18% of women veterans reporting infertility compared to 12-14% in the general U.S. population (VA.gov). Deployment-related factors, including exposure to hazardous chemicals, high-stress environments, and prolonged separations from medical care, have been linked to increased infertility diagnoses (PMC).
Additionally, the military lifestyle can contribute to inconsistent access to reproductive healthcare. Female service members may face difficulties scheduling routine gynecological care, delayed diagnoses of reproductive issues, and a lack of specialized fertility services while on active duty.

The Emotional Toll of Infertility for Women Veterans
Beyond the physical challenges, the emotional impact of infertility can be devastating. Women veterans diagnosed with infertility are more likely to struggle with mental health conditions, including anxiety and depression (VA.gov). There is also the aspect of the trauma of military sexual assault, which disproportionately affects female service members, has also been linked to increased rates of infertility among veterans.
Women consistently deal with extreme feelings of isolation, frustration, and a sense of betrayal by their own bodies as they face the hardships of infertility. Many women veterans struggle with balancing their military identity—one of strength and resilience—with the vulnerability of infertility. Unfortunately, the lack of open conversations about this issue can make women feel even more alone, regardless of their service status.

Why We Need to Talk About It
Infertility among veterans and their spouses remains an overlooked issue in both military and civilian healthcare discussions, and it is time to shine a brighter light on this growing topic. So many struggle in silence, not knowing where to turn for support. Sharing personal experiences and advocating for improved care can help change the narrative, one of our biggest goals at Valkyrie Warriors United.
By talking about infertility in military and veteran communities, we can work to break the stigma and ensure that all women veterans have access to the care and resources they deserve.
Our Mission at Valkyrie Warriors United
At Valkyrie Warriors United, we stand with veterans and their spouses as they navigate the challenges of infertility, miscarriage, child loss, and pregnancy after loss. We believe no woman veteran should have to endure these struggles alone. Through awareness, support, and advocacy, we strive to create a compassionate community where veterans can share their experiences, access vital resources, and find the strength to heal. Our mission is to ensure that women veterans facing infertility are heard, supported, and empowered—because every warrior deserves to be seen and valued.
Infertility is a painful and challenging journey, but together, we can break the silence and foster a future where no veteran has to fight this battle alone.
